Whether you operate an everyday vehicle, heavy-duty road transport, a shipping vessel or any other craft that relies on fuel, you’ll know that contaminated fuel is never a good thing. Fortunately, help is at hand with the DieselCraft Fuel Bacteria Dip Slide.
What is the DieselCraft Fuel Bacteria Dip Slide?
This handy testing kit allows you to test your fuel regularly, without needing to drain the tank or transport the fuel elsewhere. Contaminated fuel can cause a whole range of problems, so it’s important to know that your fuel is clean.
The DieselCraft Bacteria Dip Slide is easy to use, and will determine if your fuel has been contaminated by bacteria, fungus or mould. All you need is a small fuel sample from the fuel filter or water separator.
How does it work?
Simply dip the slide into the fuel for 15 seconds, and put the slide back into the tube provided. Keep the slide in a dark location such as a desk drawer, and check it at 24, 36 and 48 hours. By this time, it will show any form of contamination.
One side of the dip slide is white, and this side will show any form of bacteria between 24 and 36 hours after exposure. The other side is off-white, and this will show any signs of mould between 36 and 48 hours after exposure.
For both sides of the slide, you can compare the results to an easy-to-read reference chart to understand the type and level of contamination in your fuel.
What causes bacteria in fuel tanks?
Quite often, water entering your fuel tanks through condensation or vents is the main culprit for bacteria. On shipping vessels and boats, this is always a higher risk than land-based vehicles. It’s just a reality that you’ll always have a bit of old fuel in your tanks, unless you routinely drain them 100%. So, there’s always a risk of old contaminated fuel affecting your new fuel.
Fortunately, once you’ve used the DieselCraft Bacteria Dip Slide to determine if there are contaminants in your fuel, there is a solution. You can add a biocide to the fuel in order to immediately kill all of the biological contaminants. After that, you can install a DieselCraft fuel stabiliser to prevent the problem from recurring.
Why is bacteria in your fuel tanks bad?
Any contaminants in your fuel are bad news. In most types of engines, you can expect the engine to run pretty rough, and you may even experience stalling. Engines with contaminated fuel are also harder to start and may end up misfiring or backfiring. In marine engines, contaminated fuel leads to engine failures and lack of propulsion, and both of these issues can be deadly for the crew.
