Filtration is a crucial part of any industrial operation, but it perhaps has even more uses within the food and beverage industry than any other. Industrial filtration systems can be found throughout most manufacturing and processing plants, doing a range of tasks including filtering food and beverage products, removing waste liquids like inks and dyes from packaging, and safely removing food product waste. Let’s take a look at some examples.
Centrifuges
A centrifuge is a device used to separate particles from liquid, so it’s used in the food industry for a lot of applications. In the actual food production side of things, we see centrifuges used widely in the dairy industry for skimming and clarifying milk, cheese production, and even controlling the amount of pulp in juices.
On a more industrial level, companies can use a centrifuge to clean the wastewater from certain manufacturing practices. For example, when food is washed, there’s often a lot of dirt, sand, starch or other particles in the water. To reduce wastewater disposal costs, a business uses a centrifuge to essentially clean the water, with the leftover waste forming a spadable paste for easy removal.
Wastewater Filtration
There are other forms of wastewater filtration used aside from centrifuges. A sludge dewatering system, for example, is widely used in the food processing industry. There is considerable cost involved in the disposal of wastewater and harsh penalties for those disposing of waste incorrectly. A sludge dewatering system helps to remove liquid from solids, meaning you end up with wastewater that’s suitable for disposal, and the solids become drier, spadable and suitable for landfill.
As a result, your business is able to meet environmental requirements, and the remaining solids are much cheaper to dispose of.
Oil Skimming
In most food production operations, the presence of oils is going to cause a problem in wastewater. Especially in large industrial settings, many people prefer the continuous belt operation of a surface oil skimmer because it operates with little human intervention.
Where you have wastewater that’s filled with food grease, oils, animal fats and other oily particles, a belt passes through the water and attracts the contaminants. As the belt moves, it passes through wiper blades which catch the oil and remove it from the belt. The contaminants are then discharged into a sump for easy removal while the belt continues on its way to collect more grease, oil and fat.
Filtration Media
You’ll also often find filtration media being used in a food processing setting. A wide range of filtration media is available, including nylon, polyester, polypropylene, and other material blends. These filtration media rolls and sheets are used to collect particles, especially when dealing with washing, cleaning or wastewater management.
