The main uses of filtration media

06 Mar 2017 | Family

Several industries use filtration media to separate particles and fluid in the workplace and at work sites.

Depending on the industry, the given fluid being separated can be a liquid, gas or supercritical fluid (i.e., a fluid that is without distinct liquid or gas phases), and the filtration media that’s employed consequently varies. The goal, however, remains the same: to separate substances by having the substances interact with a filter in fluid (liquid or gas) form.

Centrifuges are sometimes used to separate substances. Unlike filtration, where substances are filtered, centrifuges force solids to the bottom of the fluid, where the solids cake together, so that the fluid can then be transferred to a holding vessel. Centrifugation is particularly helpful for separating gelatinous or fine solids from fluid. Refer to the Interfil Centrifuges.

A key component of a filtration system is the filtration media. Filtration media separate solids from fluids by having the fluids pass through a medium that only allows the fluid to pass.

Filtered fluid is termed filtrate. Industries determine which filtration media to employ based on the type of fluid and solid being separated. Other factors to consider are the appropriate flow rate and the retention quantity.

Filter media range from 5 to 150 micron particle removal. Filter media are employed in industrial processes such as:

  • * Waste Water
  • * Hot and Cold Rolling
  • * Washing / Cleaning
  • * Course / Fine Machining
  • * Course / Fine Grinding
  • * Wire Drawing
  • * Lapping
  • * Honing
  • * Milling
  • * Turning
  • * Food / Oil Fryers

In order to maintain filtration media, regular cleaning is required, either by rinsing with solvents or detergents or by backwashing.

Here’s a look at how different industries employ filter media to comply with environmental regulations and to improve operating efficiency.

Mining Excavation & Construction

Both mining and construction companies are focused on drilling efficiency, and consequently seek to minimise the amount of ground water and mud located at drilling sites.

The Main Uses of Filtration Media

Food, Beverage & Packaging

Food, beverage and packaging companies need to reuse or discharge waste liquids, such as dyes and inks from packaging, or waste solids, such as poultry, produce and dry goods.

Renewable Energy

Renewable energy converts waste by-products from farming, food processing, wood and plastic into energy. Companies in this industry require cutting edge filtration and separation systems.

Metal & Manufacturing

Metal and manufacturing companies reuse liquids such as coolants in order to ensure that the production environment has a constant supply of coolant for lubricating tools and transporting work by products from the work area. However, over time the coolant picks up solids and oils that need to be filtered out.

Liquid Waste Management

Many industries create liquid waste. Waste management perform tasks related to managing waste from extraction through disposal, including collecting, treating, recycling, transporting and disposing of waste. Filtration is a key component of waste management.
