The Story of Interfil

08 Nov 2019 | Family

Interfil is one of the leading providers of filtration and innovative industrial technologies in the southern hemisphere. Well known for the design and manufacture of a variety of filters, centrifuges, filtration media, blowers and exhausters. It holds several patents on the technologies it provides. Interfil’s culture of continuous innovation has kept it several steps ahead of its competitors for decades.

While Interfil was officially established in 1986, its true origins can be traced back 30 years prior. In the 1960s, one of Interfil’s founders worked in a liquid filtration and asbestos processing plant. When he became the head engineer of the plant, he saw the potential and high demand for filtration solutions in Australia. This awoke his entrepreneurial spirit and he purchased the plant’s filtration sector to form the interfil company.

Early Success

Built on the back of a growing filtration industry, Interfil’s business immediately skyrocketed. The new company secured several million-dollar contracts to provide filtration solutions for major clients. These included Alcoa Aluminium, BHP Steel Mills and Ford’s Engine Plant.

Interfil’s exponential growth was further fueled by the manufacturing industry’s growing interest in recycling coolant for their processes. The company’s dedication to delivering high-quality products and timely service set the foundation for its early success.

Market-Driven Approach

Interfil invested significant time and resources into studying the Australian markets. By working closely with its clients, interfil has been able to predict and adapt to market trends ahead of most of its competitors.

In 1998, Interfil sensed a shift in the market for more environmentally friendly industrial solutions. While coolant filtration remained the company’s priority, they gradually began developing wastewater vacuumatic filters to separate waste solids from the liquids. This enabled manufacturers to save thousands of dollars in waste disposal fees and qualify for environmentally friendly considerations.

Australian Made

As a 100% Australian family owned company, Interfil began focusing on filling gaps in the local manufacturing value chain. At the turn of the century, Interfil found that local manufacturers relied heavily on products and components produced in the USA. The long lead times for products such as multi-stage exhausters resulted in major delays. Interfil shifted gears and put down casting patterns to start producing Australian Made exhausters.

Local production of all the components of its system allowed Interfil to provide faster more affordable solutions to their clients. The company also invested in improving its expertise in the development and supply of filtration media rolls. As the need for supply on-demand filtration media and services grew, Interfil inevitably became the largest supplier in the southern hemisphere.

2010 saw a rise in the demand for renewable energy solutions in the local manufacturing industry. In response, Interfil put down new patterns for high-speed centrifuges suitable for cleaning engine oil and vegetable oils to produce biofuels. By establishing distributors in the USA and UK that gave Intetfill real boost into the growing global market for the production of renewable energy.

Following the success of the centrifuges, Interfil then designed and patented a self-cleaning device for them. This enabled the centrifuges to continuously separate earth like products such as clay and sandstone from wastewater with minimal human input. The centrifuges have also been instrumental in recycling the wastewater drilling mud generated from Australia’s extensive drilling activities.

With a history that spans half a century, Interfil has become an integral part of Australia’s manufacturing industry. By continuously working with its clients and reading the markets, Interfil will continue to provide relevant products and services that add value to industrial processes all over the world.
